Common connection errors
Last updated 20 July 2026.
Kontala's two outside connections, HMRC and FreeAgent, both live in one place: open the account menu (the button showing your company name, top right) and choose Integrations. Only owners and admins can manage them.
HMRC connection expired or failing
HMRC authorisations do not last forever, and when one lapses, VAT submissions start failing with authorisation errors.
- Open the account menu and choose Integrations.
- On the HMRC Making Tax Digital card, if the badge shows Not connected, choose Connect to HMRC and approve the authorisation on HMRC's website again.
- If the badge still shows Connected but submissions keep failing, choose Disconnect, then connect again.
Full steps are in Connect Kontala to HMRC. If HMRC rejected a specific return, see Fix a rejected VAT submission - the message usually says exactly what is wrong.
FreeAgent connection problems
The FreeAgent card works the same way: reconnect with Connect to FreeAgent when the badge shows Not connected. If a single expense failed to push to FreeAgent, you can re-push it from the expense itself - no reconnect needed.
The connection attempt itself fails
If you are sent back to Kontala with an error like "The connection link was invalid or expired", just start again from Integrations - these errors are almost always fixed by a fresh attempt.
For what each card shows and how disconnecting behaves, see Manage integrations.
